Happy B-Day Jane! We miss you!

I watched it this afternoon. Somewhat of an uneven mix of drama and comedy, but Jane Russell has loads of star quality and Penny Singleton does good work as her best friend who takes Jane in after she moves to New York. I wish someone with more presence than Louis Hayward had played Jane's romantic interest. Faith Domergue is gorgeous in her small role as a co worker of Jane's who's fearful of having her fiance go off to join the war.

This is the third time I believe it's been aired on TCM in the past year; it was virtually unseen for decades prior to this. Penny Singleton was a wonderful actress, it's a shame she seldom got to act outside of the Blondie character once she hit it big.

This movie is special to me because in the late 1980's when I first got into movie memorabilia collecting some of my first purchases were about ten original 8x10 stills from YOUNG WIDOW for only $1.50 each. It's interesting in every single still Jane is smiling away like the happiest girl in the whole USA maybe they should have called the film THE MERRY YOUNG WIDOW.
