What happened to the deer after it was shot?
They never cleared that up. Is there a concensus?

shareBeing industirous--a wallet, belt, shoes and dress for Ma Baxter.
shareI would say, the family whould use the Deer cut it up for food, I know it soulds mean, but theres no real point in just leaving uit there and If you Barrie it, thats a Waist of good meat, Sorry But thats my honest opinon of what I think would of happend
shareOh c'mon. I've never seen this movie, but I get the jist of what happened. But I doubt they would eat it! They probably sold it to somehow.
How cruel would it be to shoot some kid's deer and then feed it to him??
Jeeze.
The Yearling caught on fire and the story was forogtten. (I wish.)

I reckon you don't like the story? May I ask why? It's a good, sweet tale of how a boy becomes a man. In fact, I cried whilst reading it. I've not been so touched in my life.
share 'The Yearling' is the worst book I have ever read. The author (Rawling, not be confusing with the superior Rowling) thinks it would be a good idea to explan eveything in great BLEEDIN' detail. Who cares what the sunset looked like--we've all seen one, haven't we?
And another thing--the yearling does not arrive until almost halfway through the story, and then has very little actual purpose. I know, "The title is an analogy for Jody; he's just a yearling, and he grows up!" WHO EFFING CARES?
In conclusion, the book is the biggest waste of tree I have ever seen, and if Rawling really cared about nature, she would have not written this book at all.
The End.

Erik , why are you so venomous in your criticism of what I consider to be a masterpiece? Of course you are entitled to an opinion that differs from others, but your comments are so over the top I tend to think the book has touched a nerve and you are afraid to admit it. Your cynical summary of the book could be applied in similar fashion to any classic. The Lord of the Rings is a lot of fuss over a bunch of midgets trying to offload a ring!! I mean who effing cares!! See how easy it is.

No, please don't. We are not your shrink.
Take it to somebody who's paid to care.
I take it you don't read much. Description is critical in a novel, especially as it pertains to both setting and character. As for the title of the novel being an "analogy for Jody," I believe you mean a metaphor for Jody. If you're going to criticize someone's work, at least use the correct literary terms.

BY now, you should easily recognize that stupid, idiotic IMDb trolls are only trying to bait you.
"Erik Le Fantome" is a prime example of an IMDb troll. His preferences indicate he has a low mental capability (no plots or storylines that require thinking, just shoot 'em up; bang, bang; blood and gore; and gratuitous, often incestous, sex). "Erik Le Fantome" admits he has never seen this movie so why is he on this IMDb movie board posting extremely negative comments. All he is really trying to do with his irritating, nasty comments is get you to visit his infected website so that he may make money from his advertisers and spam trackers. Please don't go there unless you have the strongest anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-trojan and anti-tracking software available on your computer, even then, it may not be enough to protect you from this mental pickpocket.
Just ignore the IMDb trolls and they will go away, unhappy and feeling their lives have been wasted because they could not upset anybody enough to lure them to their websites. Writer, indeed! Why "Erik Le Fantome" wouldn't recognize a good novel or decent movie if either of them jumped up and bite his behind.
I suggest you just add Erik Le Fantome and the other IMDb trolls to your ignore list. May God help the good people of North Carolina where this joker says he lives.

Well Viper,
You reveal yourself to be a city slicker. Go to a 4-H website and see what kids learn about animals...and how to raise them and care for them...and even name them...and what becomes of them if they are bred for food or other products.
Ciao, e buon auguri

Saw both this movie and Old Yeller when I was around 8 years old. Both damaged me for life. I won't go to any movies in which the pet dies, and I'm 65 years old now!
shareWell, I've not seen the movie. But in the book Ma Baxter shoots and injures Flag, and it runs off--and Jody follows to end the job. I'm sure they just let it rot somewhere.

I have a question, given when this film was made... doesn anyone know if they used a puppet for the deer when it was injured... or what? It looked very real. As for what happened to it after, it was so slim, that they probably buried it, as is the custom to do to both human and animal friends.

FYI, 'usual_please', I _have_ written a novel and I have gotten quite a few comments on how good it is. I am now seeking to get it published. And trust me, I am not jealous of 'The Yearling' at all.
There were some parts of 'The Yearling' that were slightly interesting, but they were so few and far between, and the fact that the book was so loosley strung together made it hard to read.

Are you people CRAZY...???
I havn't seen this wonderful movie in ages, but if my memory serves my correctly, Jody buries the dear deer! I think this was spoken of, but not actually shown in the movie. (I have not read the book!)
Anyway... I agree with another poster, that the real YEARLING was actually JODY, and the film was not meant to be about a deer, but a lesson in how tough life can be, and how sacrifices have to be made for the greater good! A lesson which is often learnt fairly early in life, when the impact is most deeply heart-felt.

FYI.............hahahahaha.....FYI is the funniest saying ever
i cannot make comment till i have read this apparent novel......whe they publish it i promise to buy it...
It's been published since the thirties. But if you buy it, it will be a waste of cash. Rent it from the library, instead.

Good Grief Erik...give yourself some time to grow up a bit.
YOu sound so very young.
Just out of a cynical sort of curiosity, what is you novel about, Erick? If it does in fact get published and somehow gets popular, you can be sure that I will not read it simply because of your immature opinions about some very great books. I know it's your opinion, but I find it very hard to respect someone who can trash such good books
shareHello, all. I've returned.
I would very much like to apologize for my mentally unstable outbursts. I find it hard to believe I could have so little disrespect for a person and their work. If you can't tell, I've grown up a bit since my last post here. I realize that my opinions were a little over the top. I respect greatly anyone who could sit down and write a novel of that length, whether I like it or not.
In reference to Dr. Leo Marvin, I shan't tell you the plot. Not because I am afraid of you opinion, but because I am afraid of copyright infrigement. It's not you guys; I'm just generally frightened.

Erik, you now look much taller than your first posts indicated. Well done, sir.
As to 'The Yearling', there are very few perfect novels and certainly fewer still that translate well to film. I've not read the novel, so I can only say that the story, acting and cinematography all worked well together and much better than most from a film perspective.
Thank you kindly. Also, to be honest, I've not seen the movie. I've only attempted to read the book.

In the book, Jody wonders the same thing - he figures either the buzzards took care of the body or his mother threw dirt over the carcass - but it's never said what happened to the body.
shareThey Ate it!When there's no more room in hell, The dead will walk the earth...
It was thrown out to decompose in the woods. It was *beep* for the pleasure of hunting. That is the main reason people hunt, the pleasure of killing the animal. Food is secondary today no one is going to starve, with supermarkets you morons.

We Ate It.....
shareSeeming that he ran away and they immediately started looking for him the deer would have been scavenged by any number of animals. There would be nothing there to bury.
shareMaking practical use of Flag's corpse would have been too cruel. Like any other pet owner I suspect Jody buried him.
