Superb composition and cinematography

This was shown recently on TCM in HD and the video quality was remarkable: the color was brilliant, perfectly registered, and true. There must have been a restoration of this wonderful Technicolor work recently.

It's easy to see why it won Best Cinematography, Color and Best Art Direction - Interior Decoration, Color at the Oscars. The beauty is surpassing. The interior shots with the glow of the warm fire playing on the faces, and the candle on the table with the glowing circle of light on the surface are deeply striking. The close-ups of the fawn's rich short coat of fur also. The entire presentation is absolutely sensual.

Gregory Peck's Golden Globe is also well deserved. His depiction of the archetypal hard working but wise, caring father is absolutely wonderful. He is perfectly cast and at his absolute peak.

Gregory Peck was fantastic. What a great and likable character he played :).
And yes the film looked fantastic!

With talented Charles Rosher as cinematographer and prickly Natalie Kalmus as Technicolor consultant, this movie had to be the lush product it turned out to be. There was as much talent behind the camera as there was in front of it.

MGM was at the top of its game with this film.

E pluribus unum
