Elisabeth Welch

Does the great West End star Elisabeth Welch (who sang 'Stormy Weather' in Derek Jarman's The Tempest) REALLY sing 'A Voice in the Night' on the soundtrack of this film?

reply

No! IMDB have made an error!
It is in fact Elizabeth Webb (I have just seen the film)
She used the name Lizabeth Webb on stage and appeared in Vivian Ellis's "Big Ben" (1946) and "Bless The Bride", Ivor Novello's "Gay's the Word" and starred as Sarah Brown in "Guys and Dolls" at the Coliseum in 1953.

Thank you for clearing this up. Much appreciated. I knew Elisabeth Welch and often discussed her movie career with her. She never mentioned this film, but her memory of the films in which she featured (she was much more a star of the theatre) was patchy. So I was keeping an open mind with A Voice in the Night! Elisabeth was always fascinated when I discovered something new about her movies. She was sometimes confused with Lizbeth Webb and vice versa.

Movie girl: I wish I could have met her. I love all of her delightful performances. Dead of Night is my favorite. She had a lovely singing voice
and was great in every film. There was a wonderful article about her "A Touch of Class", in Classic Images Newspaper a few years ago. Big Fella with Paul Robson was another great performance.
