Help Me Identify a Similar Film

Similar Film: A few years before the movie begins, a young woman was married in secret to a wealthy man, from whom she has been estranged for an undisclosed reason. At the beginning of the movie, she arrives at the huge mansion of her husband's family, having heard that the husband has died. She is there to claim her share of the estate. She is eyed with suspicion by her brother-in-law. But, all is not as it appears. The husband has gone 'round the bend, and is not dead at all! The brother-in-law, far from the menacing, greedy man he seems to be, has devoted himself to protecting his brother. His efforts to get the wife to leave have actually been a result of his not wanting her to discover the truth about the husband she believes to be dead. In the end, the husband escapes confinement and is revealed to the wife. It is he who actually is the threat, from whom the brother-in-law rescues the wife. Somehow the husband dies. I don't think the wife and brother-in-law end up together at film's end.

Please help me locate this dark, psychological drama. I remember enjoying it.

I finally found it: Cry Wolf, starring the two stars that I had in mind from the beginning of my search, Errol Flynn and Barbara Stanwyck! The IMDB reviewers have fairly consistently panned this film that I remember rather fondly. Of course, I am a HUGE fan of both Flynn and Stanwyck. I am making it a point to view all of Flynn's NON-swashbucklers, which I think are vastly underrated and overlooked. A few are absolute masterpieces that simply did not receive the publicity necessary to promote them properly. Most suffer today from the same preconceptions about Flynn that bedeviled him during his lifetime. His very aloof, staid performance in this role is a perfect example. It is just what the role calls for, but people still bash him for it.

Here are a couple of movies that come to mind as being in a similar vein to this movie. They are mainstream (oops, no pun intended) classics, so you may have seen them: Rebecca (1940), and Suspicion (1941). Both are directed by Hitchcock. Thanks for the post, I will have to check out Cry Wolf.

Yes, Rebecca and Suspicion are both great movies. If you are a fan of Errol Flynn and Barbara Stanwyck, you should definitely check out Cry Wolf. Let me know what you think.

I'd also suggest "The Two Mrs. Carrolls" (1947) starring Humphrey Bogart and Barbara Stanwyck (again in jeopardy).
