Does anyone know the name of that piece of music that they play on the piano several times? It is familiar to me, but I don't think I've ever seen the movie before, so I thought that it might be an older composition which pre-dates the movie. Then again, maybe it was written especially for the movie, and it became famous later which is why it's familiar to me. Anyway, I would love to know what it is.
It was not originally written for piano -- it's the main theme from the third movement of Johannes Brahms' third Symphony, arranged for piano.
If you like it, and haven't heard a lot of Brahms, I recommend exploring his music. He could write deeply emotional themes like this, sweet simple melodies like the famous lullaby, and subtle, sophisticated pieces as well.
Well, thank you so much, practicepiano. I didn't expect such a speedy response. I have found that piece and added it to my library on Rhapsody. I'll check out his other works too. Thank you again.
I was also used in the '61 movie, "Goodbye Again," with Ingrid Bergman and Yves Montand. It was known as "The Theme From Goodbye Again." I think this is the version with which most people are most familiar.
You're welcome, terripinder. Hope you enjoy exploring Brahms!
And atucci-1, the practice of using beloved themes from Classical music to create a movie theme or popular song has a long history, and can be fun to track down, once you have that "hey -- I know that tune already!" sensation, from either direction.
I'm Always Chasing Rainbows (Chopin), Tonight We Love (Tchaikovsky), Lover's Concerto (probably by a guy named Petzold, but found and famously used by Bach), Goin' Home (Dvorak), 'Til the End of Time (Chopin) . . .
Carlos Santana also used it as the main riff (and chorus melody) for "Love of My life" but never credits Brahms, which is questionable behavior from a musician
