Claudette Colbert

Can she do anything wrong? I think not. One of the very best to come out of Hollywood. Right up there with Stanwyck, Davis and Arthur.

Claudette is superb in this film and I love how she plays every scene perfectly - never hams it up like some of her contemporaries might have done in the more intense bits.

I think she was one of the least mannered actresses and so likable. This is one of her best dramatic performances!

reply

I love those names you picked out! You're right, they are some of the very best.

I've recently added Ginger Rogers to my list. Though she had some issues in her private life, I've come to the conclusion that she was a very gifted entertainer. Olivia de Havilland and Jane Wyman are right up there on my list of favorites, too.

Very true. Claudette Colbert, Ginger Rogers, Barbara Stanwyck, Myrna Loy, Irene Dunne, and others mentioned, all the very greats in Comedy and Drama alike, and Ginger also in Musicals, and sometimes the others also.

Classic Era actresses as these rank highly among the most professional of all time because they had style and grace and knew just how to deliver their lines.

Claudette is especially grand in this film for those reasons mentioned and more. Great that we all appreciate her fine work in film and her inspiration to advancing culture to all who would listen and, thereby, be amazed at this wonderful lady's characterizations.

I like all the ladies mentioned, but don't forget Myrna Loy in such vehicles as "The Thin Man" series or "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House".

I'll add Dorothy McGuire to this list. She has always surprised me, reminding me each time of what a wonderful actress she is, generally underplaying roles ("Friendly Persuasion", "Old Yeller", "Gentleman's Agreement", etc.). I definitely agree with the others who have been listed!

After her showgirl/comedic/fluffy roles, Jane Wyman became a wonderful dramatic actress, which must have surprised audiences back then. They were used to her being a flighty, usually blonde, sometimes gold-digging girl though generally a clever one with a sharp wit. What a leap to "Johnny Belinda", "Miracle in the Rain" and other heart-tugging films!

What's great is that all of these ladies were equally comfortable in drama and comedy, even the occasional "screwball" comedy.

I just finished watching this film, and Claudette Colbert was fantastic. Stanwyck is my favorite actress of all time even though I haven't changed my profile in years.

She is another great one! She could play hysterical females and powerful women. She was simply amazing in "The Thorn Birds", showing that she had lost none of her power.

Stanwyck could do just about any type of role. I love her in "Babyface".

Over the past 10-15, I've gained a lot of respect for Wyman's talent. However, the best move she ever made in her life, was when she divorced Reagan.
