I just saw this movie for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I did find it a bit of stretch to think Elizabeth would not have recognized John after a few minutes with him because even with the beard I thought it was obvious. Also, what happened to John's American accent.Does one lose all trace of his mother tongue in 20 years? Hope this doesn't sound picky because it was a good film.

I think he donned the Austrian accent as part of his "disguise".

Good point for he did maintain the Kessler role right up to the end.

Did Welles character know that he was ill and was going to die soon and went to Baltimore to find his wife so that he could leave his ward, played by Natalie Wood, with his ex-wife to adopt?

I had the same problem. I met my husband almost 20 years ago and he doesn't look THAT different. I know the character has some disfiguring issues, but it was hard to swallow. Otherwise, a great film.

Regarding the question about finding his wife to leave the girl in good hands, I hadn't thought about him seeking her out for that purpose, but you may be right!
