I saw this movie last night. I missed the beginning of it but caught it somewhere in the middle. I thought it was a good spin on a ghost stories. They find the letter in the clock and the ghosts get to go home.

When they leave the house they go to they husband and wife. But they say that they will join eachother for dinner sometime. I don't know if that answered your question. I wasn't sure of what you were asking.

If others are not worth the few extra keystrokes it takes to type a readable post, then why should we help you? And this is one of your better efforts. 2 day??? That's even the same number of strokes as today. It's not cute, it's lame. Save that sort of thing for text messaging.

Hey All, I also think this board needs more people. This A&C movie is verrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy underrated. This is my favorite A&C film.

reply

I loved A&C as a child and this was my favorite of all of their moves. It's been over 20 years and I remember the basic story line, as well as the ending. The last scene is after the two ghosts are freed from the property, they are in heaven. Costello makes his way to the gates, where Melody awaits him on the other side. Costello is trying to figure out how to get in, and there is a sign indicating that the gates will be officially closed for a very long time - closed till St. Peter's birthday, or something like that.

This one was a real winner. I hope they put it out on DVD soon.

reply

THey will be showing it at the Loews here in Jersey City on sunday November 13. However they told me they could only get a 16MM print, so I doubt it will be on DVD in the near future

It's on Turner Classic Movies today ,Oct 16th. I'm watching it right now. A pretty good copy of it as well, no scratches, pretty sharp and crisp image. I loved this film when I was a kid. It used to run on "Million Dollar Movie" in New York, twice a night for a week!

I just checked, it`s on TCM again on November 15th. I just watched it again this morning after finding it surfing and plan on taping it on the 15th. I saw it as a child over... well, let`s just say I`m kinda old... but I loved it then and love it now.

This is one of the best A&C movies, my favorite along with the horror spoof A&C Meet Frankenstein, I think because it has a solid storyline instead of being just the usual vehicle for their routines. The ghosts' parting and scenes of heaven at the end are sort of bittersweet (by now, maybe they are kinda in love with each other). Oh, and the Pearly Gates are closed because of Washington's Birthday, which fits in perfectly with the Revolutionary War backstory (but kinda makes you wonder how Melody got in). Very funny, and the effects still hold up.

reply

Not Melody.

Melody went to be with Tom, her husband.

reply

That was Nora, Horatio's long lost love waiting for him on the other side of the pearly gates.

Back in the late '80s I was living in North Hollywood, California, and got to know Jess Barker, who plays Tom Danbury in the picture. He lived in an apartment building near me. He didn't like to talk about "the old days" much, as his career didn't go in the direction he would have liked, but he did like talking about this picture. He liked Lou a lot, he said Bud was a bit harder to get to know, mainly because he had epilepsy and didn't want anybody around him when he would have a seizure. Jess said the main activity on the picture between scenes were these marathon card games that Bud & Lou would start. They'd be be interrupted only when someone had to leave to shoot a scene, then they'd come right back and start playing again. He also said that Lou was an outrageous flirt, that women loved him because he had this "little boy" persona and he played on it, but that he never messed around on his wife, despite having numerous opportunities to do so.

Just thought y'all might find that interesting.

Thanks, Frankfob, for the trivia. Thank goodness for the internet, and fans like you who share with the rest of us. I hope Lou Costello gets his reward someday and is recognized as one of America's top comics. It makes me wonder how he could turn it on and off like that--play cards, then get up and do a scene! Maybe because there was something sincere in him in his approach to comedy, that he is able to just get in front of the camera and share his funny, sweet, vulnerable, everyday Joe with the audience. I miss his comedy.

Mine too. It was just on last night and I'm still thinking it over this morning. I had up my review an extra star. What a pleasure it was--and both Abbott and Costello looked so handsome in their costumes! :)

This too is one of my favorite Abbott and Costello movies, and I am very glad a lot of people responded favorably to it. I remember well for years A&C movies used to be shown every Sunday morning at 11:30 AM - so I got to know them very well and could see many of them over and over.

Also I really like Who Done It, A&C Meet Frankenstein, and Hold That Ghost.

This may not be their funniest film, but it was deff their best film. Much diff than all their other movies. It was good to see A & C acting apart from each other. The acting was top notch as well. Not only was Abbott the best straight man in the business in my oppinion, but I believe this move shows he was an excellent actor as well.

reply

It is one of their best i love it.
