Why Doesn't THIS Movie Play On Television, Anymore?

When I was a kid growing up in the 60's, THIS movie USED to play on local television (New York City), ALL THE TIME! Channels 5, 9, 11. Now, NEVER! American Movie Classics? Forget it. Turner Classic Movies? Ditto. How can kids pass through adolescence, into adulthood, WITHOUT Abbott & Costello???

TCM plays it a bunch of times a year.

Fine, dandy. My cable company (Comcast) eliminated Turner Classic Movies from its basic package, two years ago. It's NOW in their Digital package, meaning you HAVE to pay extra for it. Same with American Movie Classics, the Discovery Channel, National Geographic and the History Channel. What did THEY leave US?
The Home Shopping Channel, E!, MTV, VH-1, TBS, A & E, etc. In my childhood (many, many, many centuries ago!!), the local New York TV stations (Channels 5, 9 and 11) used to show Abbott & Costello movies, religiously. Not any more. In addition, I searched the web (CD Universe) for a DVD copy of "The Time Of Their Lives." You can't GET a copy of "The Time Of Their Lives," you HAVE to buy a buy a packaged deal of IT and OTHER Abbott & Costello movies. Well, I am partial to THAT movie and not the others. It's not a fair world!

many good classics no longer run on tv. too bad.

Too bad? TOO BAD?? You mean like in Tough Toenails??!! THAT doesn't answer MY question, though!! You would think it would at least run on Turner Classic Movies, but no! I was raised (reared?) in the 50's and 60's, and in THAT kinder-gentler era, Abbott & Costello, Laurel & Hardy, The Three Stooges and The Our Gang (Spanky & Alfalfa) Kids RULED!!! Now they're considered politically incorrect. GO FIGURE??!! I can't even get "The Time of Their Lives" on a single DVD. It's marketed as part of a group of A & C classics.
I know, "too bad."

we live in a days where political correctness rules our lives isntead of ourselves, where one cant say a word without it being understood as "Racism" and where the rea racism is agaisnt white people. if a white person and a black person applies for a job, it doesnt matter that the white person is better qualified, if you dont hire the black person you get sued for racism and they win the case. so in times like these you want to see good classics on television? you must be mad!

Well, you see, you've turned my question into an area that I didn't want to see it go: US versus THEM. WHO is THEM? That's unclear. I think there's a bias against movies that were made BEFORE a certain date on TV stations in the United States. Turner Classic Movies is virtually the ONLY station that shows old, black and white movies, anymore. I feel sorry for kids, today, who aren't exposed to old Abbott and Costello movies, as well as Laurel and Hardy. Our Gang, Amo's 'n' Andy and The Three Stooges? Now you're getting into political correctness. Bill Cosby won't have any of THAT!

reply

the reason behind the fact that our children are no longer exposed to such great movies (not counting the "donwload way") is the political corectness stuff. it is us versus them, and them are those that support this PC stuff that prevernts people from watching such movies. movies were much better before the rating system, now they try to fit in to some rating so they could show it to wider audience, which in return makes the movie worse.

Right, exactly, uh-huh. Give me Abbott & Costello over Will Ferrell, anyday!!
I mentioned Abbott & Costello to a kid, just the other day, and he just looked at me like I was from Mars. Well, I AM from Mars, but THAT'S another story!!

reply

yep, anyone i mention Abbot and costello to, they dont know them, but i keep spreading the knowledge, got couple friends to say "ill look at it".

Ignoring the tangent of political correctness....its about the benjamins...Turner bought up many of the classic movie libraries/rights years ago. They play movies which they think will make them money. I suspect that many of the black and white movies of yesteryear just dont make enough money to compete. I've seen The Breakfast Club a hundred times and cant turn away when its on...But i've seen most Abbott and Costello movies once or twice...Once i've seen them i likely wont watch again....If people watched them more the'd put them on more.

Give me a freaking break! What is it with you right wingnuts where you have to turn everything into a political debate? This is a message board about a classic FILM!!! This is not about politics!!!

Sad but true. When I was a kid in the 70's you could find A & C movies on tv sometimes on weekend mornings as well as other ones like Sherlock Holmes (with Rathbone and Bruce), Ma & Pa Kettle and Charlie Chan. In fact they would rotate between Holmes, Kettle and Chan and then occasionally rotate a selection of A&C movies into the mix to add a bit of variety.

I am sooo poohed! I thought, Okay, see if perhaps Netflix offers this title - so went to their site to search. Lo and behold, I keyed in 'Time of their' and immediately, the 'auto completer' finished my title with 'Lives'. "Eureka", I thought! But then, disappointment - I clicked for the title, and got some movie from 2008 - sigh. This was one of my favourite childhood memories, too, Barry (maybe it's a New Yorker sort of thing ... I grew up on Long Island). I am trying to remember which male character it was, who in some 'trance' like state, kept calling 'Melll oooo dee ..... Melll oooo dee', during (I think) the séance session ...

I just might have to purchase what ever DVD collection includes this title, then donate the collection to the public library, here in my new home town (had to leave the land of taxes and traffic! lol!)

What the world needs now are MORE SQUIRRELS! Then there would be fewer NUTS running around, loose!

The ghostly, male voice is supplied by actor Jess Barker, who plays "Thomas Danbury," Marjorie Reynold's ("Melody Allen") love interest in the movie. They are reunited at the end of the movie when Reynolds and Costello are proven to be innocent of the traitor charges. Costello, of course, has to wait another day to be reunited with his ghostly girlfriend, as Heaven is "closed for George Washington's Birthday." Yes, I KNOW about the "land of taxes AND traffic!!"

I blame it on the lack of truly independent tv stations that were common in the 60s and 70s. Plus, during that time, even network affiliated stations had some time slots available for 'local' programming. Growing up in an area that got tv stations from a couple of different markets, one of the NBC affiliates always showed Charlie Chan movies on Fridays at midnight and the ABC affiliate usually had Bowery Boy movies on Saturday afternoons. An independent station used to show A&C movies alternating with The Kettles, Francis the Talking Mule, and other comedy series from the 30s, 40s, and 50s.

True. But WHAT'S Turner Classic Movies excuse? Or, American Movies Classics, when they're NOT showing The Godfather Trilogy, the Rocky franchise and the Dirty Harry franchise??? Can't we introduce Bud & Lou to the younger generation, who must think that comedy started with Adam Sandler? Are you reading this, Robert Osborne???

Right now it is on This (out of Boston). Okay, there's commercials and probably edited. If Abbott and Costello is on, it must be Saturday afternoon.

reply

I just saw it, too! It's my favorite of all their movies. Well, Jack and the Beanstalk is too!

reply

Hey, Robert Osborne, of Turner Classic Movies, PLEASE (!!!) make room on your TV schedule for THIS Abbott & Costello gem! Commercials? Highly edited? Yes, it was when I was a little tyke, watching THIS movie, over-and-over, again, on Channels 5 & 9 (Million Dollar Movie), in New York City. I mean, Mr. Osborne, you make room for The Three Stooges, why not Abbott & Costello, too???

It's on Turner Classic Movies TODAY, 4pm Eastern time. I've never seen it but plan on watching it today. I watched a lot of Abbott & Costello movies when I was a kid and never missed The Million Dollar Movie.

Thank you for your service to our country. My dad was a lifer Marine and I know the sacrifices that are made by honorable men like you. God bless you.

Best regards.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm receiving it a day late (October 3rd). That's all right, though, I remember watching it on Million Dollar Movie (New York City), so I KNOW it practically verbatim. Thanks, also, for recognizing MY military (Veteran) status!!
