with so many mediocre public domain editions of this movie on the market i was wondering if there was so much as a single superior edition available.

The VCIentertainment.com DVD is inexpensive and in pretty good shape. There may be some short missing segments, but they're tolerable. Scenes in the dark are somewhat too dark. But, director of photography Lucien Andriot's black and white photography is otherwise perfect.
The story, actors, actresses, cinematography, and direction are way above each filmworker's pay grade in what may be director Edgar Ulmers' best work. This is really the "B-Movie" director's A-Movie.
