Janis Wilson as young Martha

What a wonderful actress! I had to look her up and was surprised to see that she did so few films. I think she could have been one of the greats. Her facial expressions were terrifying!

She took the slap from Mrs. Ivers well, too.

I found her utterly charmless, wooden and annoying - impossible to believe she grew up to be Barbara Stanwyck. And the "prologue" in general was clearly the weakest part of the film, a stiltedly acted yet overwrought family melodrama (the absolutely terribly filmed killing of that aunt being the lowest low). Fortunately, the further on the film went, the better it got and in the end we have ourselves a rather top notch, complex, expertly realized noir with solid performances across the board (did Douglas ever again play such a wimp as he did here?) Gets an 8/10.

I think she was terrific in this movie.

Actually, I think that everyone was perfectly cast!

She was not very good. Stilted and amateurish.
