On which novel is this film based?

I wonder how the studio got access to the novel by Karel J. Benes?
Usually I'm always successful whenever I'm searching for any novels on which movies from the forties are based on. This was the first time that I could not find the novel in amazon dot com. There is no book by Karel J. Benes or K. J. Benes available.
Does anybody know more?

I assume that Karel is a Czech author, but how did the studio or the film director find out about the novel if it never got translated into English???

It's a remake of an Elisabeth Bergner film. That's how Warner's knew about it.

I'm sure it was translated back in the 30s. Just because you can't find it now doesn't mean it wasn't in print at some time. Amazon only carries things currently in print or very recently out of print but still warehoused. And even if it wasn't published in the US, studio staff were always on the lookout for good stories and had publishers around the world sending them new works that might be used for a movie.

The original Czech novel is entitled Uloupeny Zivot.
