Island? Which island?

To which island does Kate (good sister) need to be taken to? And near which island is the lighthouse located? In the movie it looks a lot like California's coast line. I don't think we have too many mountainy rocky shorelines?

There's a reason it looks like the California coastline. Since Betty's company was paying to produce the film, she decided to save money and shoot the exteriors at Pebble Beach and erected the lighthouse at Laguna Beach, rather than go all the way to New England, where the film is based.

Since the owner of the local antiques store is named Martha, I think it's reasonable to assume this little joke was intended to mean they're on Martha's Vineyard.

reply

Actually, it's stated in the movie that it's Martha's Vineyard. (I just watched it last night.)

reply

The only filming location IMDb mentions is Long Beach Airport.

reply

I just watched the movie as well but never heard the name mentioned. They only refer to it as "The Island."

According to the imdb it's actually been filmed in and around Monterrey, CA. But I think it's supposed to be Martha's Vineyard although the town square with the shops around it looked an awful lot like the one in the "Peyton Place" TV series. So maybe that has been filmed in the studio?

reply

Are you sure it was supposed to be Martha's Vineyard? The way they stressed the whole "Yankee" and Portland, ME not Portland, OR thing, I began to assume "The Islands" may have been the ones off the coast of Georgia (like Jekyll Island).

reply

You wouldn't take a ferry from New Bedford, Mass. to Georgia and the map at the beginning shows that the ferry leaves from there. There are only three islands you take a ship to from that city, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket or Cuttyhunk.

reply

During a conversion, the girls talk about going to Hyannis, which would make the island either Nantucket or Matha's Vineyard.

What I thought was really strange about this "Island" is that the twin's family clearly owns a very nice Cottage. Must have for a long time, probably inherited.
How big is this island? Because it seems like absoutely nobody knows the twins, not Glenn Ford's character nor the lighthouse keeper! Just how bis is this island? Also nobody gives the twins a second look when they walk together on the dock.
For a movie with superb trick photography where they even thought of shadows cast on the other twin by the passing twin, this is weird.
Am I missing something?

reply

Well, at the beginning, they show New Bedford on the map, so it's Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, or Cuttyhunk. And as far as all the "Yankee" talk goes, from what I can see, people from New England are proud to be Yankees.

reply

Locals call Martha's Vineyard "The Vineyard," so likely "The Island" is MV.
