The wedding ring?

I just caught this. As Kate was trying to save Pat's life, she ended up holding her ring. Who put it on her finger? It's unlikely she would have in the middle of the storm, trying to survive. Even if it wasn't lost in the storm, did someone else find it when they found her and assume it came off?
Just wondering how this is supposed to have played out.

Kate took Pat's ring off before she died, and put it on her own finger, deciding at that moment to assume Pat's identity for the rest of the film.

The ring slipped off of Pat's finger and into Kate's hand when Kate was trying to pull Pat back into the boat to save her. It's never clear when the ring got on her finger, but Kate didn't decide to impersonate Pat until she heard the doctor calling her "Mrs. Emerson" while she was recovering in the lighthouse.

The OP's question also occurred to me. I'm going to assume that she was found unconsious, clutching the ring, and those who rescued or treated her put the ring on her finger, supposing she was Patricia, whose marraige was on the rocks and perhaps debating with herself whether to keep the ring or throw it into the sea, only to be interrupted when the gale suddenly struck and claimed the life of her twin sister.

That's a good assumption, because when she came to, she acted surprised that they referred her to as Mrs Emerson, Patricia, instead of Kate--Not normally a Bette Davis fan, but I liked her a lot in this movie, and I liked the movie too
