Is this the movie that Carol Burnett...

... spoofed where the twins were named Patsy and Vera? And Patsy says that the lighthouse is her friend and it speaks to her saying "Hi, PAAAAAAAAAAT-sy." Does anyone else remember that and still laugh to this day like I do?

Thank you for posting this... I came here because I had a vague memory of Carol Burnett doing a lighthouse movie parody and figured this had to be it. If anyone remembers more about that skit, please give us info :-) I guess it isn't as well known as "Went with the Wind" or "Mildred Fierce".

reply

Oh I remember this skit quite well ! In one memorable scene, Carol sends up Davis terrifically by responding to someone's "hey !" with "'Hey' ?? Hey is for horses !"

reply

I don't remember this skit as well as I would like to, but I remember the title: A Swiped Life. All I can remember about this sketch is that it was very funny! It would be nice if TCM could play one of these sketches like the shorts and promos they play.

I remember it very clearly! Harvey Korman played Bill, and he had this hilarious way of smoking his pipe - as if he had a number of false starts before getting it to his mouth. At the end, when Patsy confesses that she'd impersonated her sister to get close to Bill, he answers "How smutty!" It was just such an off-beat line, I can still hear him saying it.

Flat, drab passion meanders across the screen!

I forgot about the "Hi, PAAATT-SY" line, that's hilarious!

I remember a couple of scenes. Vera (was that her name?) was a slut and all of her male servants (which were played by Carol's dancers/extras) would grab and kiss her every chance they got while Bill wasn't looking. Of course, Patsy was shocked by this because she didn't know anything about her sister's infidelities at that point. In the end, Bill left Patsy, but she got over it quickly because after he left, she whistled for all the other guys to come back out, at which point they began to kiss her up and down...!

I was a little girl when I watched The Carol Burnett Show, so I never knew what movie she was mocking. Now that I've actually seen some of them, the skits are even funnier. Her imitations of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford are priceless!

Don't forget the part where Harvey (in the beginning of the skit) asks Carol if she has a 15,000 watt light bulb for his lighthouse, and she comes stumbling out carrying a light bulb half as big as she is.

reply

Oh, Lord, I'd forgotten that! I remember near the end, when Patsy's impersonating Vera, and realizes what a terrible life Bill has been leading with her, she says to him sympathetically, "I guess I've made you the laughing-stock of New England," and he replies, "Try the entire Eastern Seaboard!"

Flat, drab passion meanders across the screen!

reply

Hey, you're right! Man, I'd forgotten about that altogether, but now that you mention it I remember. Strange how many movies are referenced in comedy that I wind up seeing years after I saw the spoof.

I loved that parody, and quote the "Hi, PAAAAAAT-sy often to friends who do, as well. I still think of this movie as "A Swiped Life."

I wish there was a DVD set of just the film parodies from the Carol Burnett Show.

reply

I think I was first intrigued and fascinated by classic films thanks to the good old 'Carol Burnett' parodies. And, Carol's take on Bette was indeed funny.

I remember in my High School Theatre Arts class, we ALL talked about the Carol Burnett Show the next day after it aired (on syndication, of course, I'm not THAT old!). One girl joked, does EVERYONE watch that show?! And, yes, we all did! I wish it would come out on DVD's - I've bought those available but they don't have much on them, unfortunately.

Time Life *is indeed* putting "The Carol Burnett Show" out on DVD at last, on September 25th of this year.

You can read the article about that at TV Shows on DVD.com.

Thanks for the link! I wound up pausing the movie and watched both parts and more.

I need to look up the link, which someone offered below...THANK YOU!!!

I used to w arch Carol Burnett and the entire, glorious Saturday Night lineup on CBS in the 70's, as a little girl. I'm sure I saw this skit, but I don't remember, and must not have known which movie she was parodying, as I hadn't seen "A Stolen Life" until only a couple of years ago!!!

I love Bette Davis, and I love Carol Burnett.:)

reply

Carol Burnett did the best parodies. She did one of Rebecca and Random Harvest, too!

reply

I was too young to understand the movies that Carol Burnett parodied, except Gone With The Wind, that one I understood. I went on YouTube, and watched it earlier this evening, as I was watching 'A Stolen Life' on TCM. Well now I know why my siblings and I used to do the 'Hi Pat--t--s--y!'to each other! Loved the lightbulb too!

I'm watching this parody right now........for the 10th (at least!) time...Carol Burnett and Vicki, Harvey and the whole supporting cast plus the incredible guest stars NEVER disappointed when they parodied a classic old movie - this send-up of "a Stolen Life" was one of the VERY BEST! imo, the "Gone/Went With The Wind" was THE best ever....there'll never be another comedic genius like Carol Burnett - not in my lifetime, anyway

Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought an idiot - than to open it and remove all doubt!
