Who was Blanche?
I must have missed the explanation of who Blanche (Rhonda Fleming) was. Was she a relative, a secretary, or just what exactly? She dressed very well but seemed to be an employee of some kind.

shareSupposed to be Brent's secretary but as she was just a device to establish friction between the two step brothers she didnt really have much of a role , surprising considering her beauty etc
shareThanks, darmandom.
sharePossible spoilers:
Apparently, she is intended to be the professor's ex-mistress in addition to his secretary. (How else can she afford such nice clothes and jewels? "Goodness had nothing to do with it," apparently.) He kills her because, as he says, he loved her and she didn't love him.
Incidentally, in the book, Blanche is the professor's sister, not his secretary or mistress. She spends most of the book stuck in her room because of a defective door handle. She isn't killed.
