Take a candle to the basement ?

Why does everybody take a candle when they go down to the cellar, when there is a hurricane lamp ( i.e. with glass chimney) right on a table in the hall at the top of the spiral staircase, that they all pass on the way down. Yeah, yeah, I know - - plot device. Just not very logical.
