Spooky House Movies

Although it doesn't have ghosts, this movie is a suitable companion to THE HAUNTING with its macabre and very scary house. What other thrillers are there where a spooky house is a principal ingredient?

Personally I love the old Simmons mansion from the 'Ghost & Mr. Chicken'. The exterior shot is the house from 'Psycho' and the interior with that organ loft & hidden staircase is, well down right spooky!

Don't forget "Hold that Ghost" with Abbott and Costello [1941] and "Eastside Kids vs Bela Lugosi" [1943]. As a matter of fact they did two movies the "Eastside Kids" of haunted houses with Bela Lugosi.

There are a Whistler movie or two with spooky houses... and a Bob Hope.

I highly recommend "The Bat Whispers" (1930) and "The Ghoul" (1975). "Bat Whispers" is a brilliant black & white old dark house mystery. "The Ghoul" is not a great movie but it does have a great old spooky house where most of the action takes place.

If you'd like to see a spoof of the old "dark spooky house" genre, I recommend Larry Blamire's "Dark and Stormy Night." Hilarious.

The Gorilla (a comedy thriller similar to all those Three Stooges shorts where they're stuck in a creepy old mansion)
