Was this movie ever shown on Disney Channel?

I heard somewhere that this is movie aired on the Disney Channel until the early 1990's. Is that true?

reply

No. This is a common misconception. The animated segments were often played in various clip type shows, but the film has never been broadcast in its entirety in the US.

SOTS continues to play about once a year in England on the BBC. Restored, uncut, and without commercial interruptions or station ID logos on the screen.

It was also shown in its entirety on the Disney Channel in England - I have just used a VHS copy taken from TV, with prominent Disney logo, to create a DVD.

Is there any way to get a copy of this version? Surely a television broadcast version that was captured digitally can be transferred to a DVD. The version I have is a PAL VHS copied to a DVD, but it looks crappy. But if they currently show it annually in Britain, where can I get a copy of that version?

reply

Youtube had it up, and various individuals are certainly selling it online.

Unless I am misremebering I also thought I watched it as a kid on early disney channel. This would have been in teh mid 80s or so.

Disney channel frequently ran The Tar Baby cartoon and Zip-e-de-Doo-Dah as filler between programs (back in the days before they started running commercials) but I never saw the movie broadcast in its entirety -- and I was a constant viewer in the 80s. However, I think Disney Channel Magazine (their long-defunct monthly program guide) might've had some sort of cut-out project (finger puppets, mobile, something-or-other) to promote what became its final American theatrical run in the mid-80s. Seem to recall having a bunch of Brer cutouts, but fuzzy on what they were or where they came from, and that magazine is the most likely source.
