As Usual...

The person who wrote the summary of the movie did not outside research and barely paid attention to the plot.

The movie is based on "A Genius n the Family," a collection of short stories written by Hiram Percy Maxim about his early years (up to the age of 12) with his famous father. I have not read the book, but Wikipedia describes it as "incredibly amusing." Clearly, the movie is intended as a light romantic comedy set in the years before Mr. Maxim invents his famous machine gun. For a romantic comedy it ends about the right time, because Mrs. Maxim stays behind in the United States when Hiram moves permanently to England in 1881. He remarries there, though it is not clear that he ever got divorced. Not the right direction to go with a romantic comedy made in 1946, though it might work well now.
