Smoky

This film, like so many forgotten movies, is one I will never forget as a young boy in the 40's. I haven't seen it many, many years. Hopefully, it's in some vault somewhere in pristine condition ready to be transfered to DVD. I'm probably asking too much. It was not one of Fred MacMurray's favorites, as far as I know. He always seemed slightly bitter about the movies he was asked to act in. I really don't know why as he gave a splendid performance in this one with Burl Ives and Anne Baxter. I would love to see it again after all these years to see how it holds up. I'll bet it's still wonderful!!

Thats just Great, Ill just fly the whole family to England from the Us just to watch this movie. Ha Ha.... . It may be worth it just to show the kids a good moral story these days, insted of the junk they have watch on tv today. Yes the best horse movie/story to date and no where to be found on Video(Or the fess Parker re-make). Let't hope DVD soon before my little one's grow up!

I remember my father taking me to see this back in the forties. Since then I had forgotten the title and tried to find it on Imdb with no luck not knowing the title. When I saw it in my tv programme the title connected. I'm looking forward to watching it again and see if I still like it.

Just seen it again since 1946 and no it didn't have the same effect on me, I'm sorry to say I didn't think much of it. Nice to hear all those Burl Ives songs though.

Will add myself to the short line of people enquiring about this movie's availability. As #2 states, this was on British TV the other day but, tragically, I set the video wrong and only got the first 45 minutes! Is it possible to obtain a copy of the movie anywhere? (or, failing that, could someone please tell me how it ends?!)

Am gonna post this on the main Westerns discussion board too.

Thank you so much, dear normandevauxreynolds - I've seen "Smoky" at age of 10 years (1948) in the southeastern Europe (in the ravines of the wild Balkans! ): I loved it and I love it equally now... Thank you, my friend.

Yes, bittorrent - but thanks to one of my greatchildren! I'm a to old horse for informatic...

I've seen "Smoky" ten or twelve times 60 years ago - in theatre (there was no open air screening). The theatre was cheap - the communist government had the same Roman imperators principle for the peoples peace: panem et circenses ("Bread and circuses" or "Bread and games"). But the food was rare and expensive in Yugoslavia. Hollywood's movies were our happiness - and the USA food packages helped us not to starve to death. (You can ask your grandfather: perhaps he participated as schoolboy by making food packages (CARE and UNRRA) for Europe! Perhaps I did eat his chocolate by watching "Smoky"!).

But since half a hundred years I live in France (I have the same French wife since 45 years - what a pity, isn't it?) - and I'm hungry again, despite the good French food - I will stay svelte and slender... But my great happiness are soever Hollywood pictures...

I thank you again, dear normandevauxreynolds!

I am just watching Smoky on the Turner Classic Movie channel (TCM) here in the U.S.A. you can order it on TCM.COM.
I was never a Fred MacMurray fan except for Double Indemnity with Barbara Stanwyck! but I loved Anne Baxter although she was older than me.
Smoky reminded me of The Black Stallion movie? anyone remember that one?

I just saw this movie tonight for the first time in 40 years. It's good but more soap opera than horse opera. The relationship between Fred MacMurray and Smoky makes Roy Rogers and Trigger's relationship seem positively stand offish.
