is it me or are all the performances stilted?

is it me or are all the performances stilted?

Anne baxter's performance in particular, it just didnt flow as the disillusioned nouveau riche.

Anne baxter's performance as the drunkage meeting them in Paris was laughable LOL

Perhaps to some. But, she managed to stumble her way into an Academy Award without any trouble.

I second. It's you.

Maybe it's just the difference in acting styles then & now. Not every viewer can make that transition & enter into the mood & tone of another era.

Yeah I agree, if I understand stilted correctly. Something odd was affecting all the performances, like maybe the director asked too much of them, guiding them to some tense emotional state he wanted.

Lest we forget:

The source material book contained some subject matter and situations that wouldn't pass the Hayes Code which was in place for several decades in Hollywood; and thus, we have a white-washed, albeit still quite watchable, film adaptation of the book.

With that in mind, the screenwriters and director must have had a difficult time of walking the tightrope of making as faithful a screen adaptation of the novel as possible, while still adhering to the dictates of the Code and, consequently, the cast members themselves would have some trouble in understanding the script and the motivations of the characters they were portraying.
