Yes-- so was Somerset Maugham for that matter. Despite the fact that he had been married and had a daughter, he was relative "out" for his time.

I once came across some online remark or other, that Clifton Webb's Uncle Ellott portrayal was a more accurate depiction of the real world W. Somerset Maugham himself, than was the fictionalized portrayal of Maugham by Herbert Marshall; sounds about right!
