They couldn't stand each other when they got married, so why did they do it? Was it because the lawyer said living together could get them arrested on other charges besides murder? Or was it because she knew she was pregnant then?

Their lawyer remarked about how an unmarried man and woman living at the same residence was the source of a lot of curiosity and gossip (I'm paraphrasing). I also think there was the implication that a husband and wife couldn't be forced to testify against each other for any potential future trumped-up charges.
