Date of film

Though the release date says 1947, I'm fairly sure this was made in 1936. The cars, clothes, and ages of the actors would point to this. In any event, a good version of a film re-made in France cerca 1989-90. In the latter version, M. Hire (the name is slightly different in the earlier version) is not specifically Jewish.

It was made after Duvivier's return to France after the war. Basta.

Ohm is correct -this is a postwar production. To original poster opusv: before making such assertions, contradicting all known published sources, with "I'm fairly sure this was made in 1936...", you should have made a minimal check. Just looking at the cast list you will see that several of the supporting players were not in the film industry pre-World War II: for example, Michel Ardan as Fernand debuted in 1946 and would have been only 15 (doesn't match his screen appearance) had the film been made in 1936; similarly this was the screen debut for Lita Recio, all of whose other credits are from 1949 to date.
