Leonard Penish, i,e, Leonard Parrish

The correct identification of this actor is Leonard Panish. He got the larger role in the first episode because of his ability to speak Italian. While still serving in Italy he met an Italian girl at the opera in Naples, they had seats next to each other. They conversed while at the theatre and eventually made arrangements to see each other further. This relationship grew and eventually they were married.

After the war, Leonard and his bride Anna returned to the U.S. and after considering a career in films he decided to return to college. Much later he became involved in local government and was Los Angeles Counties official registrar of voters for many years until his retirement.

Leonard was a neighbor of mine. I had enjoyed Paisan (Paisa) several years earlier and was watching it again when the name Leonard Penish caught my attention and I noted that the particular actor looked like my neighbor. Leonard confirmed this in discussion one night where he told me about why he got the particular role, how he met Anna, and why he didn't pursue a career in films.

Leonard passed away a couple of years ago.
