Great Victorian sets and costumes (some spoilers)

One of the best things about the 1946 movie are the Victorian sets and costumes. The Victorian sets create a moody atmosphere. The Victorian costumes look authentic. Here are some examples.

Mildred wears a Victorian waitress outfit of a long black dress, with a white pinafore and a white cap.

After their theatre date, Mildred puts on a beautiful white crochet lace head scarf over her dark hair.

Mildred walks in the night to the round entrance of the famous London underground train tunnels.

Victorian buildings enclose a maze of narrow, dark cobblestone streets.

Mildred's outfits are in a tawdry-chic glamour style. Her skirts, jackets and hats do not match. Her jacket and hat are gaudily decorated with boa feathers.

Mildred wears a glittering necklace of dark jewels. Symbolically, the vixen Mildred is a dark jewel. She is beautiful like a jewel, but her dark side is selfish, shrill and ill-tempered.

Sally Athelny wears conservative Gibson Girl outfits.

Philip's flat and the Athelny house have dark interiors and long staircases.

After Philip pays his last visit to Mildred in a quarantined hospital, he walks past the shadow of a tall iron gate, which resemble prison bars. Symbolically, Philip has now been released from the prison of his obession with Mildred.

The 1946 film OF HUMAN BONDAGE is a classic in its own right. I hope a DVD is released soon.
