Mildred Character...Bondage.

Man, I've seen most all of Eleanor's movies from 1950s and back. I really enjoy all of her roles. But this one! I actually hated her character. I could not stand her. At one point, when she returned to him pregnant, I practically shouted at the TV screen for him to wise up and throw her out the door. And, when she wrecked his apartment...that's enough... I truly couldn't stand her character. However, this only has one meaning for me...that Eleanor was a truly great actress. In fact, it took me a couple of minutes to realize that Mildred's character was being performed by Eleanor. I am glad for one thing, though. I'm glad she didn't continue to get type cast with this type of character throughout the remainder of her career. That happened to so many actors and actresses of that period. In fact, many complain in their bios and interviews of the type casting system back then. Imagine, she may never have been cast for "Voice of the Turtle" or "Valentino", "Scaramouche", "Valley of the Kings", or "Interrupted Melody"...all good (and great) roles. Or...as the Baroness in "Sound of Music" decades later. Whew!!
