Why Just one shoe?

In the beginning of the movie. Just before Richard Dix enters the house he is investigating. He takes off just one shoe, and puts into his pocket, before entering the house. Why is it he takes off just one shoe?

He actually takes off both shoes, putting one in each coat pocket.

After reading your question, I went back and watched the scene again. It LOOKS like he only takes off one shoe because of the way the scene is cut. It fades from the scene of him outside to a scene of him inside the house. (It looks like they trimmed his entrance for timing reasons.) When it fades to the inside of the house, you'll notice that the first shoe is already in his left pocket, and then we see him take off his remaining shoe to put into his right pocket.

So he took off both shoes--we just didn't get to see him taking off the first one.

I didn't notice that at the beginning of the film. He does leave one shoe behind at the scene of a crime later on.
