One of the most requested titles by the public

I was in the retail video business from the mid 1980s until 2001 and MARGIE was one of the most sought after films by women of all ages. No one could believe that it was not available on home video in any form.

I don't know why not. FOX knows it is in high demand, but this is the same video company that thought that Shirley Temple videos would not sell, so go figure.

Maybe some copyright complications.

reply

Fox KNOWS we all want it and won't do anything about it? Shame on them!

My guess is that attitudes and mores are so changed since 1946 that the premise of a student falling in love with her high school French teacher(and vice versa) is now unacceptable to most people.

This is not the only film kept out of circulation because of this kind of reasoning.

reply

I do not think that that is the reason.

There have been some cases where a high school teacher
fell in love with a student-and even more college professors
who fell in love with students.
Although we don't know for sure, I believe that Margie
and Mr. Fontayne got together after she graduated from high school.
It would've been awkward and probably unacceptable
for them to date while she was a student
although he admitted that he was younger than people thought.
However, his age wasn't the issue-it was the fact
that he was a teacher and she was a high school student.
I know that he fell in love with her
while she was a student as he revealed
as much while dancing with her at the prom.
But the movie didn't reveal exactly at what point
they became involved, married and had a family.
Just as today, it wouldn't have been acceptable
for a high school student especially one
who's younger than most of her classmates
as Margie was-to become involved with her teacher.
So Mr Fontayne probably waited until she graduated
from high school and became legal age before they
could openly date and marry.

reply

yes that makes sense --

but wasnt Margie a senior so he didnt have to wait too long?

TCM showed this recently so who knows - maybe it will be released someday.

reply

FMC aired it recently on May 29, 2012.
Hopefully, between them and TCM(my two favorite movie channels!) it'll be aired again soon.Sometimes TCM will feature a star on his/her birthday by airing many of their movies. Maybe Jeanne Crain will be honored when her time comes and Margie will be aired.
I love this movie although the bloomer thing was a little far fetched (she should've had more than one pair. She should've tossed the old pair, repaired them or had Cynthia repair them for sure after the ice skating incident.
She definately should've had a special pair for the prom). However, I realize that the elastic/bloomer thing was a plot device so Mr. Fontayne could come to the rescue...as he did a couple of times.

I haven't watched the movie in a while which I now intend to do :) but I think the teacher mentions something to the grandma about waiting til next year to court Margie.

The only Abnormality is the incapacity to love

But, we really didn't see anything happen. And Margie was almost 18. Mr. Fontayne probably didn't persue her until after graduation. We didn't even see him kiss her until the final scene, when they were in the attic of their home with their daughter. That takes place 18 years later.
