'Graphic Gunplay not suitable for children'

This quote is from the Mouse House itself concerning the removal of "The
Martins and the Coys" segment.

This doesn't follow, considering that guns were used to much deadlier
effect in "Bambi", and those scenes weren't edited out. Consider also
the trigger-happy Clayton in "Tarzan", Captain Hook's off-handed (pun)
murder of an operatic crewman in "Peter Pan", Madam Medusa's shotgun
spree in "The Rescuers", Widow Tweed's radiator assassination in "The
Fox and the Hound" and many more high-caliber hijinks in the features.

Let's not get into their plan of editing out tobacco references...

Which are just as inconsistent. They still allow the "peace pipe" scene in Peter Pan. And of course kids all smoke in Pinocchio, but I guess if the movie is perceived as "anti-smoking" it gets a pass.

And here's something else. A year after they released this on DVD, they released Atlantis, which had a serious amount of gunplay.

"HOPSCOTCH!"

reply

I also remember their aborted attempts to re-edit Disney DVDs to remove all signs of smoking. Preposterous!

reply

They've only removed smoking in the lesser known films. The smoking is still in Pinocchio, Alice in Wonderland, 101 Dalmatians, The Great Mouse Detective, Oliver & COmpany and the Little Mermaid.

"HOPSCOTCH!"

As much as we don't like old-fashioned customs which are now regarded as brutal and unhealthy, these things should not be censored from older works. When they revise history, Disney may not realize that they are emulating the Nazis and the Soviets.

reply

They kept those scenes you mentioned above in, yet couldn't keep Pecos Bill's cigar between his lips in Melody Time, nor have Goofy smoking for about 5 seconds in Saludos Amigos. Not to mention that Jose Carioca still has his cigar and so does the Grand Duke in Cinderella.

reply

Yet in the "El Gaucho Goofy" cartoon in Saludos Amigos (where they edit Goofy's smoking, he clearly exclaims, "Maconudo! (sp?)", which I think means "excellent" or "fantastic" or something like that. It's also a brand of cigars, strangely enough.

So apparently a half naked women in "All the Cats Join" is OK but a few guns is crossing the line?

They edited "All the Cats Join In" as well.

When the girl gets out of the shower and changes, you could originally see her breasts from the side. However they erased her breasts in the 2000 release.

They did the same thing on the first Pixar Shorts DVD. On the original VHS tape version, appallingly entitled "Tiny Toy Stories", during " Knick Back" the girl in the bikini had considerably larger breasts while the mermaid wore pasties rather than a more modest bikini top.

Pathetic really.

"Who's driving this plane? Stan Butler?"

reply

Double standards. In the same compilation we have the killing of the singing whale, but I guess that's not such a big deal... LOL (Peta, are you there?)

The Region 2 Disney DVD of Make Mine Music is UNCENSORED and has The Martins And The Coys segment intact.

You can buy it at www.dvd-shoppen.com

Although you'll need a multi region or region free DVD player to view it.
