How come that ----- (spoilers)

How come that the Production Code censors missed the suicide of Robert Mitchum in this movie, when it was clear that suicide was a sin and could NOT be shown on film?

After all the censors had ten months earlier refused to allow Orson Welles's suicide in 'The Stranger'.
