Does anyone know, was Lou really a teatotaler?

We know Abbot hated driving and never go his driver's license. In fact the only time he drove in film was The Time of Their Lives. He was taught just enough for the film and hated it.

Costello repeatedly states in his films that he doesn't drink, was this is policy for his character or did he never drink? Abbott became an alcoholic in his later years, I wonder if that's another reason why Lou didn't drink?
