This film is fine. Rather impressive for a debut.
It is a smaller and simpler movie than most he will make. But very seldom does a director get to start off doing everything they want with a film. Especially when he mentioned he was only able to do that one time.. Winter Light.

I was rather put off by the theatrical performances, the dull narrative, and corny dialogue. Yeah, it had some memorable moments but they were few and far between. There have been far more superior debut films imo (400 Blows being the prime favorite).

Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.

I watched this, not seeing much till about halfway through thinking it was early and not expecting much - I almost didn't finish it - but it sure sharpened up in the last third. And, proved itself to be a Bergman film, early or not. I liked it, though as I say I hadn't seen any for a while.
