why did the Swede just wait to be killed?

Even though he was warned that two hit men were after him, the Swede didn't do anything to protect himself. He just waited to be killed. Why?

I recommend reading the short story, which ends with Swede being killed. It's a short story, indeed. But Hemingway really beautifully describes a person, through the eyes of his main protagonist, Nick Adams, who has seen too much, and can't run any more. In the movie it's assumed because of his heartbreak from Kitty. But Kitty's not in the story. The story says it all without saying anything, which is how powerful a writer Hemingway was.
