Why would the Saving & Loan money have been depositing the money into the bank ie Potter’s bank?
OT: Was Potter’s family a rich from banking even when George was a boy since he was already richest man in the county?

Potter didn't own that bank. As for why Bailey Brothers Building and Loan used the bank at all, I'd guess for security (they had a safe) and also interest.
They didn't get into old man Potter's story much. He could have been from old money or self made. I guess it doesn't matter from the story perspective.
