I think a lot of very dangerous substances were quite available back in those times. You could buy cocaine in the drugstore at one point in history... I think it's very believable for a druggists from that time to have very dangerous chemicals and poisons about.

Many medications are actually carefully administered poisons, and he had to mix them up himself. Back then they didn't just transfer pills from the big bulk bottle to a smaller one for the customer.
