Garfield's Character

I just read an informative book called "New York Hustlers" about young men who hire out their services in NYC between 1920 and 1960. It gave me insights to the Garfield character in "Humoresque." Despite the use of refined violin playing, Garfield's character can be considered "rough trade." I now better understand some of the early Brando roles, and, of course, those played by James Dean.

I thought Garfield's character was a total dick, especially at the end. He didn't even seem particularly sorry his "love" had died. And Joan Crawford is so hard looking! Not my sort of actors, I guess. But at the end, I was just telling off Garfield.....

I thought a man who had just realized his lover had killed herself, would be distraught. I thought he was acting like he just dropped chili on his trousers.
