Pretty horrible

I would not want to watch this film. I think it's terrible that it exploited the actor's disfigurement. It promotes the stereotype that people who are disfigured are evil. Acromegaly is a terrible disease. I have seen pictures of men who were handsome at 20 and disfigured by 30. People in this situation deserve sympathy rather than being exploited in this way.

It was like 70 years ago and it's on tonight on Svengoolie..I'm watching

reply

I only saw one scene of it maybe 20 years ago and thought, "how horrible."

I like Svengoolie, but this is one episode I'm going to skip.

It gave that actor a career at a time when it may have been difficult for him to have a more conventional job. War is hell. There were many men scarred by the gases used in WWI, and subsequently wore masks when in public so as not to scare women and children. Think about that... the people they had gone to battle to protect didn't want to see them. Have you ever seen 1932's Freaks? That featured people from the Freak Shows of the time... talk about exploitation.

It's a very good film. I don't feel Rondo was exploited. You should give it a chance.

I agree. His wife suggested he make use of his looks and go into movies. He was having trouble getting work any other way. Someone had to play heavies and monsters, why not himself. The only difference is that he didn't need as much makeup.

I respect his choice to live with what he was given, as it would be a lot easier to hide.

You're only looking at one aspect of the film, and by doing so, hurting the very cause you would purport to champion.
You cannot allow Rondo's acting to stand on its own nor allow his contribution to the production be allowed to take place and it to be appreciated on its own either.
You're too fixated on Rondo's disfigurement to explore the films other aspects, for one, the madness of the artist marcel, and his efforts to coerce the creeper to do his bidding. How he blames the critic for their lack of f:ood rather than accept the obvious reality that there is little difference between his sculptures and the fecal piles found in commodes.

reply

We have to admit he looked dapper in a suit and hat

reply

Some actors simply look sinister and are type-casted into those parts for all their career.
Rondo was smart to use his looks to play heavies and, by all accounts, he was a kind, religious man.
If he did not have a problem doing this I don't think we should either.

batvette and everyone,
Maybe it's true that he had to do this at the time. But in 2016, I do not want to watch the film. The one scene I saw was too disturbing to me.

About the last thing I would ever watch is Freaks.
