the plot rings a bell

I guessed the murder method because once many years ago I read something with the same gimmick, though I don't recognize the name Christianna Brand.

And I'm sure I've seen something on TV with the same gimmick about disguising the evidence.

Wish I could remember what. Does anyone else have a more specific mental itch?

reply

Christianna Brand's novel went into reprint briefly in the early '90s, so it is possible that this is what you remember - her name is not a standout name for remembering as there is little exposure of her work.

Of course the plot device that anaesthetic gases are mislabled in order to jeapordise a patient in the operating theatre is the central conceit of 'Coma' a book and film written by Robin Cook and recommended by me!!!!

reply

Coma is brilliant, and crops up quite a lot on TCM.

reply

Do you remember the exact uses of the gases? Was C02 supposed to be in one of the cannisters? I was trying to explain this plot to an anesthesiologist and he said they wouldn't have had CO2 in the operating room then. Was this just a plot device or do I remember it incorrectly? Thanks!

reply

Yes, carbon dioxide was the murder weapon, but the canister was disguised to look like pure oxygen.

Well, with an unsubtle title like "Green for Danger," the second they introduce the green item, and mention it in the script, you're half done, except for cooking up a motive/culprit

It's not very subtle.

reply

But that's the whole point, my dear boy! They give you a tease, so you can then come to the wrong conclusion! Finding out who is the culprit is the whole game! For someone with any medical background, how it was done was obvious as soon as we watched the first murder! But who, now that's another thing entirely!

reply

True. And, unfortunately, you're given terrible clues as to who it can be. Clues come increasingly late and always point to everyone for a motive. Absolutely no way to tell who it was based on any of the clues. They literally could have made it any one of the survivors in the end and it would have fit.

True enough, but since the movie is in black & white, and since they lard on a number of red herrings / suspects / motivations, there is sufficient deflection / obfuscation that, for most first-time viewers, the outcome is rarely guessed !

J'ai l'oeil AMÈRICAIN !

I agree, my first perceptions that this wasn't a first rate thriller were incorrect. And once I stopped judging it, I throughly enjoyed it.
