I read the book about 9 years ago and I remember someone getting hit with a blunt object. He didn't immediately die, but eventually died from complications. I didn't see anything of the sort in the movie. Was it left out or am I remembering the book wrong?

I believe you are thinking of Pip's sister - in the novel she was attacked by Orlick at the forge, and survives brain-damaged for some time.
