The Falcon and his Background

I really enjoy all the Falcon movies but maybe did not watch close enough. I was under the impression he was American but in this last(?) movie his accent sounded decidedly British. Has anyone heard of his origins or background?

Thanks!

This from Wikipedia:
Gay Stanhope Falcon (later known in film and radio as The Falcon) is a fictional character created in 1940 by Michael Arlen. Falcon made his first appearance in Arlen's short story Gay Falcon, which was first published in 1940 in Town & Country magazine. Falcon is characterized as a freelance adventurer and troubleshooter - a man who makes his living "keeping his mouth shut and engaging in dangerous enterprises."

When the book series moved to films, George Sanders was cast in the hero role and the Falcon was re-0imagined as a suave Englishman. The Falcon in the movies was portrayed initially by Sanders and then by his brother, Tom Conway. Sanders appeared in the 1st 3 and then Conway took over for about 10 films. The Falcon's Brother introduced Conway as the Falcon because Sanders wanted to move on. They obviously are both English - hence their accents.
