6.9? Is a joke?

The calification of "Duel in the Sun" is a ridicule 6.9? This film is a masterpiece and that calification is absolutely wrong

I am not sure what this classification means as we have a different system in the U.K.I think you are inferring it is classified for adults only i.e. not for universal consumption.Obviously censorship was much more controlled in the 1940s and a film which had to be censored then or classified as adults only, might well be passed in the U.K. now as for "Universal" viewing.

The film is too crass & camp for words, and not at all to be taken seriously (okay, maybe in some respects). It is in the same camp, er, as Mommie Dearest: its like watching the proverbial train wreck, fascinating and slightly uneasy viewing (especially when one realises what Selznick did to poor Jennifer Jones, a sweet, young, slightly stupid girl lavished with the big man's rather magnanimous attentions: confusing and bewildering, I'm sure). That said, it IS a wonderful movie, something that melts one's senses - a Spectacle in all senses of the word - like nothing I've ever seen before. Highly recommended for camp enthusiasts, like me. 9/10

Selznick over did this one. He tried to make another gone with the wind, but he only had a mediocre screenplay. Lionel Barrymore plays his typical role, the whiny old man in a wheel chair. However the acting is good for the most part. It is a great film for fans of the genre. The last between Peck and Jones was very moving, and could be taken in consideration for one of the great Western moments ever. I think the movie deserves about a 7.2 maybe 7.4 at the highest.

Selznick supervised and rewrote the final screenplay! What you hear on the screen are his words. He was under immense pressure during it, living with his wife, the daughter of Louis B Mayer, while doing the leading lady and producing a few films at once, and under the strain of it all he clearly cracked. His writing is generally much better, much more subtle and clever than this.

Considering the rubbish that gets higher ratings, yes, the rating is a joke. The movie's not a masterpiece but the production values are excellent - wasted on today's audiences.

I thought the OP was trying to say "calcification." Watching this film could lead to calcification of the brain!

"Duel in the Sun" is basically a tawdry, overproduced potboiler with a horribly miscast Jennifer Jones, overwrought characters, pulp fiction plot and overblown finale.

David Selznick wanted to surpass his own (true) masterpiece, "Gone with the Wind" but, was ultimately hindered by 4 simple facts:

1. Jennifer Jones was no Vivien Leigh.
2. Lewt McCanles was no Rhett Butler.
3. King Vidor was no Victor Fleming or George Cukor.
4. He himself was no Margaret Mitchell.

Consequently, this film seems like an ill-conceived paean to Selnick's gargantuan ego and, proof that a great film cannot be created simply by hurling boatloads of money at it.

I think the film's acronym (DITS) truly describes it best.

Personally, I was a little disappointed while watching Duel In The Sun.

In retrospect it was a better movie than how I felt about it while watching it, but it is far from a great movie. High 6 / low 7 seems fair for this movie

6 / 10

i agree with viv70's comments above.

iu'm about to rate this as a 4. this film has not aged well, and is racist.

before we get started, does anyone want to get out?

reply

I think its a very good film, although it does have some flaws to it. I would give it a solid 8/10.
