Katrine Van Ryn

What happened to Katrine Van Ryn, after mother died, she just vanished from
the movie along with Magda the housekeeper?

reply

I'm so glad you posted this. I just saw this movie for the first time this morning and I was wondering the same thing. I figured I must have missed a lot in the sixtie seconds it took for me to go to the bathroom!
I already figured the daughter was sent off to some private school. But the whole Magda/mystical connection with the great grandmother was lost. Even though eventually Vincent Price experienced the wierd singing thing. They really muddied this whole connection
I could understand the whole disenfranchise thing with his daughter because of his extreme believe of this being his birthright and all...and sons were more important that way. But it didn't make sense, because of his own extreme attachment to his great grandmother.
In fact, the whole movie was farcifical.(I made that up). I think my own main interest was in the whole Hudson Valley castle patroon thing.(Living here and all). The putting down of those in Greenwich ,Ct(sounds so funny now because they are so uppity today compared to here!)....The fact the English were lowlier class wise back then.
Getting to watch an early Harry Morgan who didn't look much younger then he did in the sixties on TV. And trying and trying to figure out who the actress who played peggy was. Her silhouette looked so familiar!Hating FMC because they don't do the credits afterwards. )

The actress playing Peggy was future Oscar winner Jessica Tandy.

I have seen this movie a zillion times and I can't figure out what happened to her too. The last time anything was mentioned of her is when hubby started to hullucinate about that music and she mentioned Katrine. But we haven't seen Katrine since the mother died. It was strange also because The Gene Tirney character liked her so much. My interest was in the Hudson Valley, Catskill patroon stuff too. I have alot fo friends who all have Dutch last names who come from that area, I live on Long Island. And it is hilarious about the reference to Greenwich. How things change. And Henry(Harry)was much heavier. I remember seeing him in the Ox Bow Incident and he does look the same but a liitle heavier. What about the acotr who played the doctor. He ended up playing in a lot z rated Sci Fi movies. He was real cute and should of done better.

I assumed she died because she heard Azilde singing and playing the harpsichord but I now realize that it predicted her mother's death not her own. Earlier in the film Magda explains to Miranda that Azilde killed herself because her husband never loved her and only wanted their male son whom he kept from her. Azilde prayed for disaster for the Van Ryns and said she would be at Dragonwyke to sing and play when disaster was about to happen but only Van Ryns would be able to hear her. So when Katrina heard Azilde and disappeared from the rest of the movie, it leaves one to ponder whether she died as well as her mother.

i noticed that too...the movie had a lot of holes in it...but it was good, but unexplained holes kind of botched it up....i wondered too...

I am reading "Dragonwyck", the paperback. Recently got it from Amazon. It's really a good story, and last night I checked IMDB to see comments on the movie, which I've never seen. I can't believe it's not available on DVD.

After reading the question about what happened to Katrina, one of those co-incidences happened. Today I read on pg. 233 what happened to her. After Miranda and Nicholas marry and spend some time in N. Y. City at the town house, they return to a newly reburbished Dragonwyck. Miranda then feels like it is time for Katrina to return to her father. He tells her "If you would like her here for awhile, I've no objection, but I see no reason for it. She's well cared for by her aunt, to whom I make a handsome allowance."

Apparently Katrina was sent to her aunt after Johanna's death, and that's where she stays.

reply

I read the book like a hundred times... Katrine and Magda are sent off to one of Johanna's relatives. I haven't seen the movie, but I would assume they are the same, or at least similar.

reply

As I'm a big fan of Gene Tierney, I've always wanted to see Dragonwyck. I caught a chopped up version of it on AMC the other night and I too was wondering what had happened to Katrine Van Ryn. She did just disappear after Johanna's death. Thanks for the 411.

reply

I wondered to if she was sent to live with a relative because her disapperance is never explained in the movie.

I also wondered if I missed something I watched for the first time this morning but couldn't watch every minute so I thought either she died or maybe was sent away while I was out of the room. Then I thought maybe they would show her at the end or would at least be mentioned but she wasnt so I was quite puzzled.Strange but interesting movie.

Thank you for your comment about "Dragonwyck"
A lot of people raised that matter at the time what you raised. As you said she did go away to stay with a realative, but you could have missed that point if you left the room.

Vincent was a very quiet man in real life. I met him whilst working at Fox in Soho, London in the middle 60s whilst he was here filming "Witchfinder General"
We went into a cafe in Soho for a cup of tea early one morning and was surprised how meek he was. That was the era of the great stars.

In the book, Katrine's absence is explained by Nicholas when Miranda asks for her he tells her that the child is now living with her mother's family, and that it wouldn't be a good idea for her to return. The implication is that now that he had married Miranda, the child's former governess, his former in-laws had turned the child against her.

There is no explanation in the movie for Katrine and Magda's absence. That's the only thing that lacks for me, in this wonderful movie!

reneriva, I totally agree with you - that question belonged in the film.

Now I can agree with you again! :-)

Also, it would've been nice to have some more background on the history of the family and grandmother Annetje Gaansevant.

Best wishes,

You know, Rita, now I think of it, the thing that makes this movie so powerful for me is the fact that you get the impression that Nicholas could be a nice man. You just hope he is going to change, especially when he is dancing with Miranda and laughs so captivating. One of the big turning points is when he gives Johanna the plant!

Reneriva, the part about the oleander was brilliant. And his line, "Her foul gluttony has killed her."

The book has a snippet of a backstory that Nicholas loved his mother very much but she was not overly attentive to her child.

In the book after the departure of Katrine and Magda, is Katrine ever mentioned again?

reply

I have to dig through my book pile, but if memory serves, when Miranda is told by Jeff Turner that she is a wealthy widow, she tells him that it really belongs to Nicholas's daughter. I think that is how it's handled but I could be senile.

I met a distant cousin of Vincent Price's years ago at a job interview. His name was Stanley Price but no relation to the longtime character actor/dialogue coach. He said he met his cousin once when Vincent was doing his one-man show about Oscar Wilde at Ford's Theater. He told me when the actor Stanley Price died, his wife got telegrams of consolation from across the country.

Actually they do explain Katrine's departure watch again and you will catch it. The scene is where Tierney is now married and is going over the menu for the party and is waiting for Price to return from NYC. Tierney mentions to the Housekeeper they found Katrine's favorite doll and it will be packed and sent to her and not to worry. If you sneeze or blink you will miss it. Mystery solved .LOL

reply

Yes, I caught that little phrase when we watched it for the first time last night. They don't say WHERE she's gone, but I assumed she'd been sent to boarding school. In 'Jane Eyre' there's a similar situation, where Mr. Rochester is due to remarry, and it's assumed Adele will go to boarding school, to keep her out of the way of the new wife. In 'Dragonwyk', I assumed it was for practical reasons: with Mama dead, Miranda had to leave for the sake of propriety, and there would be nobody at home to look after the little girl, so she was sent away.

Flat, drab passion meanders across the screen!

reply

Yeah, it's weird that she just disappears from the movie like this. I just got done watching it for the first time - didn't like it much, so I figured I zoned out or something when they explained what happened. Vincent Price is great and there's some creepy scenes, but the whole movie is just a little too stuffy more my taste. 7/10.

What's the Spanish for drunken bum?

reply

From that little scene I always thought she was sent away to school as well.

reply

While watching the movie this exact question popped into my head. Thanks to all who provided info from the book as well as referencing the line in the movie I must have blanked on.

reply

Same for me. I loved the film, but I wondered about Katrine too. I apparently blinked or sneezed at the wrong time!

reply

I also just watched the film and missed what happened to Katrine (although I assumed she was probably sent away to school or something because that seemed a likely possibility). Thanks to everyone for the info and bringing up the line that implied she was sent away. Maybe it should have been made a bit clearer.
