The French Depression

I caught this film on TCM a few days ago. I've never read so many varied reviews. I guess it's a matter of taste.

One of the things I noticed right away is that Moreau's character is sexually harassed by practically every man she comes into contact with. It's strange to me since farm workers during the French Depression hated city people due to their own crisis which effected the peasants or farmers. France almost lost all of its farming during the 1930's.

I found that the men in the movie seemed angry which I guess you can atribute to the times.

All in all this movie is depressing. I also thought Moreau was too old to play the part of Celeste.

I wouldn't watch it again. I give it 4/10

reply

Excuse me Goddard as Celestine not Moreau.

reply

It's very strange because IMDB says the part of Celeste is played by Goddard but my info on my TV says its Moreau.

Well, this Goddard version was remade 18 years later with Moreau in the lead, so either you were reading the wrong synopsis or you actually were watching the later version. The Moreau version is considered the better one, btw, though this one has many charms.

Hope that helps!

I also don't plan on watching it again. I hac a streamed version which I have deleted. This is very rare for me, I usually don't delete anything.
