Did I miss the obvious?
She thought he was dead. They had a history. Why didn't he make an effort to find her? Why did she have to chance upon him to reunite?
Maybe it's just a suspension of belief sort of thing.

Maybe he did make an effort, but they don't stress that because the story wasn't about them finding each other.

Yes, thanks. I've seen it a few times since my original post. She also took a professional name which would have made it difficult for him to find her. I don't think I saw it from the beginning the first time.
