This sounds interesting and I'll keep my eyes open for it. I've never heard of it before and I'm surprised because it has a very respectable cast.
Lucille Ball was a beautiful young woman and a good actor no matter what she was in. I can't think of a bad performance. If you liked her in this, you may like Stage Door. She has a fairly big part in that. She has a lot of snappy dialogue, and it is funny but it's a drama, not a comedy. Katherine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers are in it. It's a good movie.
I like Clifton Webb a lot. He was a terrific character actor and you can't go wrong with William Bendix! He had such a wonderful voice.

MJF! Nice description of a scene! You really make me want to see it! He was in a couple of movies I really like, Lifeboat(Hitchcock, yeah!) and A Bell for Adano.

It's not anywhere near as great as "Lifeboat", or "Laura", but it's a solid film.

I don't know why people are so surprised by Ball's straight performance. Part of the reason "I Love Lucy"
is so great is that there was always great acting supporting Ball's comic genius. She, like Carroll O'Connor
and Bea Arthur were actors, not just stand-up comedians, who have dominated sitcoms for over 20
years (think Jerry Seinfeld and Rosanne Barr. Actors they are not). There is a lot of emotional comedy in
Lucy's work.

Too bad she didn't work to grow as an actor or artist after ILL. Instead, she just kept giving us carbon
copies of great work she had already done on two lesser sitcoms ("The Lucy Show", "Here's Lucy").
