Spoilers: Issue with the Ending

How did Galt clear himself? He had nothing solid on Cathcart, no way to connect him to the dead thug. Whatever credibility Cathcart's wife's testimony might have held was pretty much canceled out by the bullets she put in her hubby's back. Not only did he fail to report Jardine's corpse in his apartment, but he also has the dead thug's belongings in his office. Seriously-Anyone?

I just rewatched this film and agree. There is really nothing concrete that comes close to trumping finding the body in Galt's apartment complete with a reasonable motive. This is not likely to prompt the police to clear Galt (let alone quickly). Of course, this is of a piece with the whole last third of the film--the search for the white suit and the "clue" leading to the gallery were all far fetched and ridiculous. I wouldn't mind if it had a juicy quotable script or a good cast, but it doesn't.

Glad to hear that someone else feels that way too, thanks. I thought Lucille Ball and the hired thug were good, but I was unimpressed with the protagonist. Overall, my impression of this film would be: Meh.

Kind of dumb to leave a rotting corpse under your bed, not to mention the smell!

One of the most ridiculous film I have ever seen-

How come that a man who had been prosecuted and jailed for manslaughter ever be given a license to practice as a private detective

Why would dozens of cleaning firms bother to check up on whether or not they
have received a white suit for cleaning just because some stupid jerk wants to know?

Why would the Art Gallery take a stupid jerk seriously when it is blatantly obvious that he knows nothing about art and doesn't look like he could afford anything worth 40 dollars let alone 40,000 dollars.

Why on earth would she just invite the stupid jerk into her boss's office and just leave him there unaccompanied.

What on earth did he expect to find in Cathcart's desk, a transcript detailing why and how he had committed murder

How come that he just happens to arrive at the Lincoln building at the very moment that Foss has been killed and just happens to notice it is Foss when a body falling from that height would have been smashed to pieces.

Taxi drivers just leave the ignition key in the socket, why not put a sign on the taxi - please steal me!!!!!!

Nobody in New York locks the doors of their apartments, anybody and everybody can just walk in whenever they want to.

the body has been covered with newspapers but he noticed the man's keys, which were shown earlier when he had the thug empty his pockets-- the keys were on a gun keychain. He put 2 & 2 together.

Exactly! That was so stupid. I was stunned that they didn't move the body. That was almost as stupid as the killer NOT calling the police right away to report a fight in the apartment. The killer went through all the trouble to stage the fight scene and then just waits for the guy to wake up and unstage it.

Also the detective comes across as a complete wuss. The secretary was a lot tougher than the wussy boy detective.

reply

I agree, especially with your characterization of the detective. He was so whiny.
