Mark Stevens

Soooo attractive, in a Dana Andrews sort of way. Too bad he never quite hit it big.

reply

Actually, he rather reminded me of William Holden, slightly younger. And not a bad actor either.

reply

I thought he bore a resemblance to Alan Ladd. Mostly in his mannerisms and delivery I guess.

reply

He actually reminded me of Gregory Peck a little bit.

reply

Me? It was Cornell Wilde.

I give another vote for Alan Ladd. I'm sure Stevens wasn't as short as Ladd but he bore a facial resemblance to Ladd and delivered his lines in a voice similar to Ladd.

reply

I can see glimpses of a bunch of the actors mentioned above in his looks. Cornell Wilde, certainly. Gregory Peck, not so much, at least the way I was squinting at it. But, in his mannerisms and line-readings, it was Alan Ladd all the way!

reply

I totally agree. I can just see the studio execs of the day thinking the same thing, and trying out Stevens in the lead (even though only fourth billed) in the hopes of promoting him as "the new Alan Ladd" -- which wouldn't have been the first time a strategy like that was tried; James Whitmore's early years in movies were mostly vehicles that Spencer Tracy could have played in.

He was very good but had a lot of competition for the kind of character he played. Just weren't enough "film noir" to keep them all busy.

An underestimated good actor and like everyone said here, there were other well known actors that filled the same build. Supposedly 2oth century fox's version of Paramount's famous Alan Ladd type. He may not have been in the same caliber, but he became the envy of many Hollywood men, by having an affair with Hedy Lamarr.

reply

Refreshing to see an actor that wasn't popular. He was a new face to me.

reply

I think he was very handsome. Maybe noir wasn't quite his niche but he certainly had a lot of talent! He did very well in musicals, having been a singer in nightclubs in Canada prior to being in Hollywood. Apparently, he was a jack-of-all-trades sort, he wrote novels later in life, was interested in art and even tried directing.

I can see why some see him resembling Alan Ladd, Dana Andrews, and Gregory Peck somewhat. Facially, for some reason, I see a bit of a resemblance between him and Bobby Darin.

reply

I found him to be sort of a physical cross between Alan Ladd and William Holden. Perhaps the studio (20th Century Fox) was grooming him to be competition for the other two actors, but he never reached the fame they did. Too bad, he wasn't a bad actor, and was pretty attractive, too.

reply

Il n'a pas eu la carrière qu'il aurait dû avoir . Je suis un fan de Mark Stevens.

reply

Unfortunately I can't say he did much for me which didn't diminish my interest in this movie though.
He came off to me a bit as Dana Andrews's understudy and the studio may have groomed him to be a bigger star. He just didn't have Dana's presence.

In the same mold there was just too much competition. There were Ladd and also Cornel Wilde.

Agreed. I think he was a good actor, especially in this role. Odd that he wasn't offered more roles like this.

Go to bed Frank or this is going to get ugly .
